SHS FFA Floriculture Team Wins State Contest - Again!

The Southmont FFA Floriculture judging team competed in the State Floriculture Judging Contest on April 21st 2018. The team of Josie B., Emily T., Caleb S. and Erin W. placed 1st in the contest for the eleventh year in a row giving the school its 22nd state title in Floriculture judging. The team of Bernice C., Holly S., Bayley B., Lauren T., and Hollea C. placed 2nd. There were 11 teams and 44 individuals competing this year. The contest was held at the Central Nine Career Center located in Greenwood, Indiana. Each member of the state champion team will receive a $500 scholarship given by the Southmont FFA Chapter.

The Southmont team had seven members in the top nine at the contest. Individually Josie B. placed 1st, Caleb S. placed 2nd, Emily T. placed 3rd, Erin W. placed 4th, Holly S. placed 5th, Bernice C. placed 6th, Lauren T. placed 9th.

For the first time Southmont had a junior high team competing at the state level and placed 2nd. Individually Levi B. placed 1st, Caden S. placed 3rd and Aaron E. placed 4th.

This year’s floriculture contest was very competitive and tested the contestant’s knowledge and skills.  The activities in the competition included a general knowledge exam, demonstrating plant growing procedures, a problem solving exam, identifying 40 common house plants from a list of 125, and making a corsage.  These members also had to make a floral arrangement, complete a job interview, and conduct a team activity.
